Creativity and Intelligence

Warning- This post might not make any sense to you. Please don't kill me if it doesn't. Leave a comment if it does.

So, I have this friend. Lets call him Yappu, shall we? Yappu is infatuated with Lara Dutta. He spends the entire day surfing youtube for TV clippings and movie shots in which she is, wait for it, just talking! Only blabbering. Blabbering fully clothed. No, no, those slits in the evening gowns don't count. Yappu thinks her voice is classy, suave and urbane. He is also aware that she had the highest interview score ever at a miss universe pageant. So, that makes her intelligent and not some dumb bimbo!

Yappu is so in love with Lara Dutta that he discredits a reasonably good looking NID, Ahmedabad grad. It is evident that he prefers *intelligent* women over creative ones. Little does he realise that NID-A is quite a difficult place to graduate from! Your truly, preferring the other kind, tries to convince him that he is terribly mistaken.

Yappu thinks that he is the most intelligent creature in his realm - the realm being his lab. He says that he prefers someone on his wavelength (or, was it the same frequency?) and that creative people are dull and boring and morose - mainly because they don't know anything apart from art. On the other hand, intelligent people can learn stuff really quickly. It does not take an Einstein to figure out that he prefers native intelligence over native creativity - not only when it comes to women but also otherwise. I revert with the observation (from experience) that creativity is just a derivative of intelligence. You know, just as a derived class has everything there is in the base class (well, almost!), plus a little bit more. Yappu disagrees!

We then set out to define these two characteristics. Intelligence is-
  • capacity of thought and reason
  • possession of sound knowledge
Creation is a mental process involving the generation of new ideas and concepts or new associations between existing ideas or concepts. Generating new ideas has nothing to do with prior knowledge - that does away with point #2 above. Both of us agree till this point.

Yappu then goes on to say that intelligent people can be creative, as they know how to make *logical connections*, whereas creative people more often than not, are not intelligent. Sacrilege, I say! After all, writing down a math proof can be far simpler than coming up with something that appeals to the eye (for example).

A discussion involving Ozzy Osbourne and his weird ways, Shakira's IQ and a dyslexic Albert Einstein follows. Yappu does not relent and gives his final verdict - creative is a subset of intelligent.

Well, I beg to disagree! What do you guys think?

bah .. wat a silly yappu

being creative is tougher than trying to appear intelligent :P
the best manifestation of intelligence is creativity ...
nowadays even computers with moderate AI can make 'logical connections' but they are not creative :P
thats the next level ! go tell ur yappu guy

okay, some clarifications -

1. i am "yappu". what a silly name, hobbit.

2. just because i sent you ONE link in which she talks sense does NOT mean i spend time surfing for her videos.

3. 'creativity" is very subjective. putting a tampon in a teacup and showing it to the world is considered "art" and "creative". silly.

4. would you rather spend time with a creative person, or an intelligent one? creative does NOT mean said person cam come up with new ideas on anything. it just means that in their FIELD or AREA of interest, they can come up with good ideas. good music composers can have a terrible fashion sense. intelligent people observe, analyze and learn much faster than pure "creative" ones. its a lot more interesting to talk to them.

5. i prefer a jack of all trades over a master (or mistress) of one. there is a lot more diversity, a lot less boring. they can also adapt a lot better.

clear hai? :D

my view:

"creative" is a word I try my best never to use if it can be avoided. I would say "ah, that's intelligent/cool" than "ah, that's creative" unless it's 'OMFG/dousing my face with ice water' type. :)

So much of junk food for thought :D again all the observations and derivations and definitions are highly subjective :)
